I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t like Pizza. There’s just something about it, isn’t there? The combination of a crispy crust, fresh toppings and stringy cheese make a meal that is so satisfying and delicious, just the smell of it makes most weak at the knees. Of course, I’m sure we all have that bad memory of a disappointing pizza experience. That is why there are definitely a few factors that have to be perfected in order to create the ideal pizza.
Freshly Made Dough
Pizzas should be made from scratch. There is no way around it. A fresh ball of dough should be rolled and stretched just before a pizza is laden with toppings and goes into the oven. Even rolling out the dough beforehand is not an option. The dough can dry up, form a skin or over-proof, resulting in a hard, flat crust. The dough should then be rolled out thinly to ensure a crispy crust.
Fresh and Generous Toppings
Four pieces of ham and three mushrooms does not equal a Regina pizza. Toppings should be fresh and they should be plentiful! There’s nothing worse than trying to divide your three pieces of avocado between eight slices of pizza. Every bite should encompass all the ingredients that make up that pizza. However, it doesn’t matter how much tinned asparagus you find on your pizza, the fact remains that it is tinned. Fresh ingredients are key! Whether it be tomato paste, a slice of salami, or an olive, it needs to be used in its freshest form.
Cheesy Cheese
Stringy. Soft. Tasty. These are just some of the attributes a cheese that is used on pizzas should have. Mozzarella cheese has proved to be the best cheese for the job. It melts well, has a soft elastic consistency and doesn’t have an over-bearing flavour. Other cheeses like Cheddar and Gouda don’t have the same texture and often overpower the other ingredients with their strong taste. As with the toppings, I’m sure you will all agree, the cheese should also be added generously. If you find yourself wondering if you ordered extra cheese by mistake, then you should know that it’s a good pizza!
One more thing. If your pizza arrives within ten minutes in a restaurant, you know that there’s something wrong. Creating a pizza from scratch and baking it should take anything between twenty and forty minutes. So be patient, a good pizza is worth the wait.
At Life Café, we strive to fulfill all of the above when making our pizzas. So come pop in the next time you feel like a perfect pizza experience.
