Halo Surf Designs

On Facebook, he describes himself as ‘owner, shaper and coffee maker’. He is otherwise and better known as Neil Esterhuizen, and he is indeed the man behind the Halo brand.

If you’ve visited Life Café recently, you would have noticed the brand new surfboard that hangs above the counter. We’re proud to say that it’s a Halo custom design board, shaped with our down-to-earth café in mind. It’s an artwork that is well placed, especially given how many resident surfers we have in our midst.

The Halo Effect

If you like what you see hanging above our counter, you’ll be blown away by Halo Surf Design’s portfolio. The trademark Halo logo is steadily gaining an esteemed reputation within the surfing community. Surfboards, kiteboards, longboards and standup paddle boards (SUPs) – if you can surf it, they can design it.

But who are these artists and what is their philosophy when it comes to shaping boards? Halo Surf Designs is made up of a group of long-time surfers, each with their own craft, who design and shape under the Halo Design label. Their works are primarily influenced by the fundamental principles of surfboard design, but they are always open to fresh ideas and adaptations.

As Shapers working in the 21st Century, we are not parochial in our thinking and strive to find the balance between what was, what is and what could be.

In a diverse city like Cape Town, it’s no surprise that surf culture continues to grow and evolve. And in Melkbosstrand, where Halo Designs is based, this culture is thriving. In this sleepy coastal town, it’s plain to see that surfing is a way of life. These surfers are captivated by the ways of the ocean, and they live to ride another wave.

This passion for surfing is instilled in the Halo brand. A Halo board is truly an artwork in motion – made for the man or woman who is lucky enough to ride one. If you’re looking into the prospect of purchasing a new board, give Neil a call. Chat to him about what your dream board looks like in terms of style, shape and design, and his team will build it for you.

For the board that adorns Life Café’s wall, we wanted a traditional wooden board that would compliment the relaxed feel that we’ve already created. If you haven’t yet set your eyes on the beauty, here are a few pics. Thanks again Halo for a great addition to our café. We had our logo burnt onto the raw wood by Bay Graphix.

If you have a dream board in mind, why not chat to one of the Halo designers. Visit their Facebook page to find out more.
